Alisa, respectfully, John Davidson is NOT a lobbyist for "big insurance". I have known him for over 20 years. He does not get paid to lobby and you should provide some support for that statement or retract it.

Also, you state that most of his money comes from "big insurance" and that is also untrue and should be retracted by you.

Here are the facts from Open Secrets.org regarding Mr Davidson and Mr Vandeventer. Mr Davidson has received support from the RNC and that accounts for most of the PAC 10% of his contributions raised. He has out raised your candidate by nearly double in individual contributions and also invested $30K of his own money (put your money where your mouth is) in his campaign effort whereas Mr Vandeventer has invested $125 dollars of his own money.

Your statements are just not supported by the facts. Using the devil term "big insurance" as if it were some bad association is rediculous and is making an argument by using guilt by association.

John Davidson (R)

Raised: $102,087
Spent: $56,747
Cash on Hand: $45,338
Last Report: March 31, 2010

PAC contributions $10,500 (10%)
Individual contributions $61,290 (60%)
Candidate self-financing $30,297 (30%)
Other $0 (0%)

Clark Vandeventer (R)

Raised: $34,306
Spent: $11,473
Cash on Hand: $22,832
Last Report: March 31, 2010

PAC contributions $0 (0%)
Individual contributions $34,181 (100%)
Candidate self-financing $125 (0%)
Other $0 (0%)
Mr. Coplin,
I understand that as Mr. Davidson's friend you feel the need to support him.
I supposed that the information I posted was as well-known to others as it is to me. The fact that he may or may not have been paid does not mean he was not a lobbyist. If I knew my information was incorrect, I would definitely retract it.
My main reason for posting this was because these are definitely the things the Democrats will exploit.
I must take offense with your implying that a candidate must be wealthy--able to put in his own money. From what I understand, Clark only started campaigning back in March, so they are doing pretty well from what I can see. :)
Alisa,
I support the truth, no matter if it affects a friend or a foe. The truth is that John Davidson is not a lobbyist, not now and not ever. I have just told you that your information is not correct. I verified my statement with Mr. Davidson this evening, and he is NOT a lobbyist and has never been one.

Again, you have declined to give a reference, therefore, unless you have some evidence to support your statement, and can produce it so it can be verified, IMO, you should not be repeating it and should retract it. It is simple, just connect the dots for the readers here and we can move on. Otherwise, we can consider your statement to be mere speculation.

If you do research into who has and is contributing to Ms. Capps campaign, I believe the Democrats would be foolish to attempt to exploit the "lobbyist" and "big insurance" claims you make as an attack on any of the challengers. I can provide the details if you like, but you can find it on opensecrets.org for yourself. She would be throwing stones from inside a glass house.

I think you misunderstood my comment... I did not say that a candidate must be wealthy, nor did I make the implication. I said that Mr. Davidson has put at risk a sizeable amount of his savings, God's money, to pursue this opportunity. He did that because of his conviction to serve and because of a belief in himself. Perhaps Mr. Vandeventer is not in that position, I make no judgment on that.

It must be noted that the challenger in the November election to Ms. Capps MUST be able to raise around $1.5 million dollars to wage an effective campaign. When you look at the endorsements by Tony Strickland and Peter Foy and others as well as the support of the RNC, and guidance by Newt Gingrich and leaders in industry, John Davidson is the ONLY candidate that can perform at that level.

I do believe that there is a vast difference in the experience that these two candidates bring to the table. Mr. Vandeventer has experience in running not for profit organizations, for which there is little available detail. I have visited the Vandeventer Group started in October 2009, 8 months ago, I have looked at the World Changers, Inc. site started in January 2008, 2 1/2 years ago. He is CEO of both. I know he was the deputy director at the Regan Ranch and worked his way up to that position. All of that is admirable.

John Davidson worked in sales and management for six years before beginning his professional career in the life insurance industry in 1981. John has since built his company, Davidson Insurance & Financial Services, Inc., into a respected and successful insurance and financial planning company.

After distinguishing himself as a local, state, and national industry leader for 25 years, John was elected in 2006 to serve as President of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). This $20 million professional association represented more than 200,000 agents and their associates, flourished under John’s leadership. John has been successful in business for nearly as long as Mr. Vandeventer is old.

If there is a point of attack for the Democrats, it would be Mr. Vandeventer's youth and inexperience. There certainly is no comparison in that area IMO.

I have just spent several hours researching Clark and his positions, and the truth is that there is very little, IMO that distinguishes either candidate. They both appear to be strong conservatives with Christian values and experiences. I am impressed with Clark's writings and his positions on most issues mirror my own.

The goal here is to defeat Lois Capps in November and IMO, John Davidson is the only candidate qualified, positioned and equipped to do that.

Republican Senator Bob Bennett ousted in Utah convention

Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah has lost his bid to serve a fourth term after failing to advance past the GOP state convention.

Attorney Mike Lee and businessman Tim Bridgewater are the remaining Republican candidates. Bennett was a distant third in the voting among roughly 3,500 delegates. He garnered just under 27 percent of the vote. Bridgewater had 37 percent and Lee 35 percent.

Bennett is the first incumbent to lose his seat in Washington this year, the victim of a conservative movement angered by rising taxes and the growth of government.

Bennett was targeted by tea party activists and other groups for supporting a massive bailout of the financial industry, securing earmarks for his state and for co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill to mandate health insurance coverage.

If neither Lee or Bridgewater gets 60 percent of delegate votes in a third round, they will face off in a June 22 primary.

I wanted to weigh in and agree with Alisa. I have done my own research and respectfully, Richard, you are not correct in your assertions.

1. Mr. Davidson IS a lobbyist.
He was the president of the NAIFA. Which is an organization whose purpose is to lobby congress on behalf of the insurance industry. While I don't know if he was paid for that, I suspect he was, payment isn't a qualification to be considered a lobbyist.
Lobbying (also Lobby) is a form of advocacy with the intention of influencing decisions made by legislators and officials in the government by individuals, other legislators, constituents, or advocacy groups. A lobbyist is a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest or a member of a lobby. Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying that has become influential on policy.

Here is an excerpt of the annual report from the NAIFA from one of the years Mr. Davidson was president. I am attaching the document and this is from page 3. There are plenty of other examples of the organization's lobbying efforts on that page.

"NAIFA was in the forefront of groups successfully lobbying Congress to allow businesses to continue to fax information to their customers"

I personally think lobbying is an important part of our political system, the fact of the matter is that in today's political environment it is looked upon as being very bad. At another time this may not have been a big deal but you can bet that the DNC will hammer this point to no end.
That coupled with the fact that he is associated with the health insurance industry is a political nightmare. Again at another time it wouldn't have been an issue, but when so many democrats and independents feel like the insurance companies are to blame for the state of healthcare and the economy, this is a serious problem for Mr. Davidson.

2. The money.
I am attaching excerpts from the FEC. You will notice that Mr. Davidson has received NO money from the RNC and all the money from PACs comes from the insurance industry. If you look closely at the full report you will see that most of the individual contributions are from members of the insurance industry as well. Much of that money has come from not only outside the district, but from across the country. The money trail is very important because it sometimes shows who the candidate will be beholden to once in office. We need a representative who isn't in the pocket of any special interest groups. Also, when you go down the list, only TWO donations are from the district. Yes, I understand about minimums and maximums but that tells you a lot. Please click on the link on the left for more detailed information. We have enough special interest people in D.C. now--we don't need another person.

As far as the total money raised, Mr. Davidson has been raising money since December. Mr. Vandeventer just started in March. If you compare the two figures over time Mr. Vandeventer is out-raising Mr. Davidson. Especially when you take into consideration that Mr. Davidson had an outstanding loan of $22,000 and put 30k of his own money in, Mr. Vandeventer is far outpacing Mr. Davidson.
I also take offense that you are implying only candidates who put lots of money into their campaign are serious. Many people aren't in the position that Mr. Davidson is and would you exclude anyone who isn't in that position from running? This country is made up of people from all walks of life and our district is made up of people from all financial situations. Those people deserve to be represented too.
Mr. Vandeventer's background is in fundraising. He was not only an executive of an orginization, but he helped raise over 20 million dollars to build the Reagan Ranch Center here in Santa Barbara. If you want to talk about credentials to raise money I believe that Mr. Vandeventer has that won.
I've been involved in politics for 30 years and from the first time I met Clark I found him to be most honest and straightforward. While walking precincts with him, he has never dodged a question from a voter or varied from his stances even though they may differ from what a voter wanted to hear. We all need to be informed.
Wow, this District 23 Congressional election is shaping up as a REAL RACE, so we set up a separate discussion just for that, for your future postings ....

http://venturacountyteaparty.ning.com/forum/topics/ca-district-23-c...

If you wish to repost some things from this page onto the new District 23 race page, to maintain continuity, that would be fine.
You and Davidson seem to be quite focused on who can raise the most money. Again, if you will look at where Davidson has raised money so far you can see where his allegiance might be. Also, you note Clark has worked for nonprofits--last time I checked, the government was supposed to be a nonprofit.
Respectfully, please call him Mr. Davidson. John and I have attended the same church for 20 years and that is how I know him. Please also do not make the association that I speak for John. I do not. I speak for myslef and what I feel to be true. John Davidson, I'm sure like Mr. Vandeventer, is a man of integrity. I have no financial ties to either of them, do you?

I think your research is accurate and thanks for producing the details. Forgive me for the claim I made that the RNC had supported John. You are correct and I thank you for setting it straight. I heard something like that in a conversation and made an assumption.... well we all know about assumptions. I will check my facts more carefully.

If you have been involved in politics for 30 years as you said, you must understand that you cannot win this election without having the ability to raise a significant amount of funds to overcome the Capps treasure chest. Do we agree on that? If yes, then all other things being fairly equal, we need to decide which candidate has the best chance of accomplishing that task. John Davidson has developed that depth of contact over his professional career and experiences. Clark Vandeventer just has not had the time to do that, no matter how good he is at raising funds for nonprofits, real business dollars IMO are a much different story.

You are making a giant WRONG assumption that because a large number of John's contributors are in the financial, life insurance or similar businesses that they are somehow unethical or have the "big" influence of a CWA or an SEIU. "...where his allegiance MIGHT be." Just because someone's business has the word "insurance" in it does not make them a big business with huge political clout and dollars. The very fact that the contributions come from so many different states supports the idea that John Davidson has peers in the business who support him widely.

Please stay with me. These people are small business men and women who over the last 20 years have come to know and respect John for the leader he is. They contribute to his campaign to see him succeed, because they know his character and his values and his integtrity. You make it seem like there is a sinister character or quality to the demographics of his contributors and THERE IS NO SUCH connection.

Now, if you were the candidate, where would you go for support? Isn't it logical to reach out to those persons you have had contact with and who can appreciate what you bring to the table? You would go to people who know your integrity, who you have worked with in the past. It happens that Mr. Davidson has chosen finance and insurance as his career. If he had been a professional baseball player, he would have reached out to those contacts. We should not fault any candidate for doing that, should we?

Karen, it is niave at best to think that experience working for nofprofits is a substitute for real life business experience. I just don't buy it. You can try to make a nifty comparison between Mr. Vandeventer's nonprofit experienct and our supposedly "nonprofit" government, but that too falls short considering that the government is $13 Trillion in debt with $40 Trillion in unfunded liabilities. The person who gets my vote darned well better have a solid understanding and working knowledge of finances and how to balance a ledger. John Davidson is the only candidate that is in that league.

You may claim that Mr. Vandeventer had much to do with the $20 million raised for the Reagan Ranch. Respectfully, he may have been on the team, they may have used his ideas, but he was at best the Deputy Director and did not have the final say in those matters. It is disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

Perhaps we can continue this discussin on the new page?
Any future Dist 23 postings on this page will be DELETED. If you folks would like to copy some of these onto the new page, so that we have the integrity of the whole package, that would be fine.

“Disarmament of the populace is always the first step to depriving them of their civil rights and human rights…many African-Americans and women are actively assaulting the very document that first secured their own freedom... if you do not believe in the Bill of Rights, then you are not, at heart, an American.” – Mike Adams

Only in America could liberals talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund raising event.

We need to demythologize guns before the liberal attempt to create a totemic fear of them succeeds. If the gun control mentality promoting fear of guns themselves becomes our national mentality, we would turn the clock back to the days when a warrior class ruled over the people because only they had the confidence and expertise to deploy the means of defense and coercion. The gun control agenda will turn us into a people too timid to defend themselves from our would-be masters. – Alan Keyes

How can we stand up to someone that creates a 100 dollar Federal Reserve (FR) note for 2 cents and uses the face value of the note of 100 dollars to buy a 100 dollar U.S. Security where the government has to pay them 4% in interest at the end of the year? “Capital must protect itself in every possible way, both by combination and legislation. Debts must be collected, mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible. When, through the process of law, the common people lose their homes, they will become more docile and more easily governed through the strong arm of government applied by a central power of wealth under leading financiers. These truths are well known among our principal men who are now engaged in forming an imperialism to govern the world. By dividing the voter through the political party system, we can get them to expend their energies in fighting for questions of no importance. It is thus by discreet action we can secure for ourselves that which has been so well planned and so successfully accomplished.”
- President American Bankers Association, 1924

Nonetheless, in a land where every mewling babe in the American nursery is born with a debt burden of just under $200,000, the president brags that only his party is 'compassionate' to have no plan whatsoever even to attempt to do anything about this, no way, no how, not now, not ever." --columnist Mark Steyn
