Will YOU Save Freedom? Catch The Tea Party Wave

The House of Representatives has been mostly in Democrat hands since WWII, with a couple of respites.  The 2010 elections were a major, historic rout by the Republicans, putting them firmly in control.  This was more of a strong backlash to the extreme Progressive tendencies of the Obama, Pelosi, Reid regime than any great love for Republicans.  So far, they have done better than the Democrats, but are largely a big, cowardly disappointment, funding Obamacare, making mostly illusory cuts, not investigating the Obama excesses, etc.

Ventura County Tea Party recommendations

April, 2010: CA 36th District had a race. Liberal Jane Harmon won re-election in November 2010 and resigned shortly thereafter to join a Liberal think tank, which will cost the state $3MM to hold a special election, About 10 candidates are running, including Debra Bowen (D), current secretary of State. Conservative Craig Huey ran as a Republican, also garnering Libertarian endorsements.  Harman won special election.

2012 candidates have already have  positioned themselves, developing signature issues, stump speeches and lining up support.

Chris Mitchum and Abel Maldonado (brought you Prop 14 and higher taxes), are lining up to oppose Lois Capps (D, Outer Space) in the current CA District 26, which is more competitive than the old Dist 23.  Watson dropped out, to pursue business/personal interests.

Tony Strickalnd is running as the only 26 Dist Republican against "nonpartisan" (LOL!) Linda parks and a gaggle of Democrats. Dem's are pressuring candidates to drop out to avoid splitting the vote in the new nightmare top 2 primary system they created.

Democrats: carpetbagger Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, Oak Park (via People's Republik of Santa Monica); Harbor Commissioner Jess Herrera, Oxnard; real estate broker Al Goldberg, Ventura; businessman David Cruz Thayne, Westlake Village.

Mark Reed has been showing his face at Tea Party meetings and other events. He intends to run against Brad Sherman again.

Redistricting is likely to significantly affect many races.

Congresswoman Capps admits to gambling with your healthcare

This past Wednesday, July 7th, 2010, Congresswoman Capps attended a staged event at Cottage Hospital to discuss the effects of the recent healthcare legislation. During the discussion, in a rare moment of political honesty, she admitted that the healthcare legislation that was recently passed is a "big gamble" and that it "is the best (legislation) we could put out at this time."

These responses to questions from physicians are indicative of a business as usual Washington political insider. Congresswoman Capps knows little to nothing about the legislation she is signing into law and she admits it. When did it become acceptable for Washington politicians to pass legislation, not because it solves a problem, but because they can? - We deserve better.

Out of nowhere comes a fourth Dist 23 Congressional candidate!
George,

I had to pop onto my computer one last time tonight to send you a message that John Hager is likely to run as an Independent congressional candidate in District 23.

http://www.hagerforcongress.org/

His platform reads more like a Green party candidate but he is running as an Independent. Sounds like a spoiler. As of today he needs 5,000 more signatures by next Wed. His chief signature collector sounded like he could obtain that. Weird, he's not from here, but from Oceanside. He doesn't even know who Lois Capps is. Just thought you should know. -- Laurin

He neeeds to get a lot of signatures fast. Then what?
Where is Tom Watson? Why is Watson totally ignoring Port Hueneme and Oxnard?
I was in the area twice last week. If you would like me to come to an event or please ask. Contact John Van Winkle at john@watson4congress.com and he can schedule an event.

Thanks,
Tom
Tom: You might try posting it on this site then and elsewhere, so that people know.

Hager for Congress -23 District?

I heard recently that still another candidate (Independent), Tom Hager, a successful Santa Barbara lawyer, had surfaced and that he needed to get 5000 signatures by last Wednesday. Well, someone from his campaign called me today and said he had. He was also trying to get me to write letters to pressure Tom Watson and Lois Capps (good luck on the latter) to debate him. So, like good a Tea Party guy, I asked about Hager's positions on the issues. The guy could or would not answer a single question, except to prattle on about campaign finnace reform and how Lois Capps was accepting massive contributions from financial firms to vote for the new Financial "reform" bill. Finally, when he directed me to the campaign web site, the first I noticed under the Issues section, under immigration, is that he favors The "Dream Act" which is a deal killer for me right at the starting gate. He wants to give citizenship to illegals who have become "productive members of society," Hager's big concern seems to be that employers are hiring illegals on the sly to avoid paying taxes to feed the beast in D.C. Excerpt from the section on budget and debt:
" So here is my plan to reduce our debt. First, we do need carefully targeted spending cuts. These are always hotly debated because nobody wants money on which they rely to be cut. But with $13 trillion in debt, our survival requires that we reduce spending and do it in the most equitable way possible. We can start by reducing waste. Second, we need to restructure our entire tax system. The Internal Revenue Code is over 50,000 pages long, and that doesn’t count the thousands of cases interpreting the code. Complexity alone is a big drain on resources. We need to consider alternates to income tax. Changing our tax laws can yield greater income for the government (thus reducing the debt) without increasing taxes simply by eliminating the expense of tax gamesmanship that pollutes our present tax structure. Third, we can reduce the debt by bringing real economic growth. Real growth comes from innovation and improved productivity, which are fostered by education. We need to distinguish education from other spending. Education is an investment that creates value, and more of our budget needs to go there. "
...."Congress continues to spend like there is no tomorrow. I say: tomorrow is here. We need to manage our debt. We need to fix our spending distortions. We need to rebuild our tax system. We need to restart democracy, and replace the power of influence money with the power of the people." A bit vague ?
Health care: "First, I support universal health care. Every American should have access to reasonable and necessary health care. On average, as people age, access to medical care becomes more important, so our seniors deserve special attention. " His main concerns seem to be that Obamacare is poorly written, doesn't do enough and robs from Medicare.
It appears that Huber's not too keen on offshore oil drilling either:
http://hagerforcongress.org/news/story/santa-barbara-independent-ar... He should siphon votes away from Lois? I wonder if Tom is bankrolling Huber? As a special bonus, everything on his web site is also available in Español. Anyhow, here's his site
http://hagerforcongress.org/
I received this question, in an email today, regarding my comments on the Hager candidacy, (above):

Hello George,

Saw your addition to the Tea Party website:

“It appears that Huber's (should read "Hager's") not too keen on offshore oil drilling either:
http://hagerforcongress.org/news/story/santa-barbara-independent-ar...
He should siphon votes away from Lois? I wonder if Tom is bankrolling Huber (Hager)?”

If I could ask what you meant by the very last question?

My response:
It was a clumsy a attempt at humor. Since Hager will probably siphon votes away from Lois, one could joke that Tom put him up to it. However, based upon my previous conversations with Tom, he was caught by surprise by John's entry and was initially wondering if John was a spoiler sent to take away his votes. Now that Hager's positions are becoming known, that does not seem to be the case.

It would seem like Hager will not make much difference in the contest overall, except to serve as a conduit for a few Democrats fed up with Capps and/or Obama to make a protest vote, without going over to the GOP.
Tom Watson Campaign Update:

forwarded by his campaign office

I've just released my latest position paper, this one on Financial Reform. Be sure to check it out on our website and share it with your friends and neighbors. This is only one issue where Congresswoman Capps is grossly out of touch with the people of the 23rd Congressional District of California. Be informed. Stay informed. Vote informed.
