Will YOU Save Freedom? Catch The Tea Party Wave

The House of Representatives has been mostly in Democrat hands since WWII, with a couple of respites.  The 2010 elections were a major, historic rout by the Republicans, putting them firmly in control.  This was more of a strong backlash to the extreme Progressive tendencies of the Obama, Pelosi, Reid regime than any great love for Republicans.  So far, they have done better than the Democrats, but are largely a big, cowardly disappointment, funding Obamacare, making mostly illusory cuts, not investigating the Obama excesses, etc.

April, 2010: CA 36th District had a race. Liberal Jane Harmon won re-election in November 2010 and resigned shortly thereafter to join a Liberal think tank, which will cost the state $3MM to hold a special election, About 10 candidates are running, including Debra Bowen (D), current secretary of State. Conservative Craig Huey ran as a Republican, also garnering Libertarian endorsements.  Harman won special election.

2012 candidates have already have  positioned themselves, developing signature issues, stump speeches and lining up support.

Chris Mitchum and Abel Maldonado (brought you Prop 14 and higher taxes), are lining up to oppose Lois Capps (D, Outer Space) in the current CA District 26, which is more competitive than the old Dist 23.  Watson dropped out, to pursue business/personal interests.

Tony Strickalnd is running as the only 26 Dist Republican against "nonpartisan" (LOL!) Linda parks and a gaggle of Democrats. Dem's are pressuring candidates to drop out to avoid splitting the vote in the new nightmare top 2 primary system they created.

Democrats: carpetbagger Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, Oak Park (via People's Republik of Santa Monica); Harbor Commissioner Jess Herrera, Oxnard; real estate broker Al Goldberg, Ventura; businessman David Cruz Thayne, Westlake Village.

Mark Reed has been showing his face at Tea Party meetings and other events. He intends to run against Brad Sherman again.

Redistricting is likely to significantly affect many races.

In the other forum, Ms. MacDonald made reference to the 23rd District GOP race. In order to reply, I have pasted her comments here as well as my response.

Ms. MacDonald said, "And again, look at everything about a candidate. Not just what they say. Just because they say they have lived in the 23rd district for 50 years--what exactly has the 23rd district been? Not what it is today. In the past it has been mostly Los Angeles. Do we want someone "who has been asked by people in Washington" to run? Or do we want someone who has been asked by people in the Now 23rd District to run? I think the latter. Do we want someone who is being financially backed by PAC's from all over the country or do we want a locally sponsored man? Again, I think the latter. Please do your homework, look who is behind these candidates and really pay attention to what they are saying."

I offer the following reply:

Ms. MacDonald, are we talking about Devore, Whitman or Poizner, or are we talking about the 23rd District? “I think the latter”.

Relative to the 23rd District, and after taking your advice, and looking at everything about a candidate, and not just what they say, I want a man that has deep roots like a tree firmly planted. You can draw artificial lines around the tree saying it is in this district or that, but the tree still has roots. Those roots are the family ties, the business and personal relationships, and that common connection to the community that can only come from being firmly planted and having grown for 50 years. It seems to me that a tree that has only grown for 10 years or less would have less fruit and be less mature as far as having deep roots in the community.

I want a man that is motivated by the need of the people of the 23rd District to have the best representation they can have. It is a definite plus that after making the decision to run, one candidate has the backing of the people in Washington to run. Certainly which ever candidate wins the primary, will need that Washington backing to beat Ms. Capps, and I consider it a plus that one candidate has it now.

Likewise, I want someone that has already received the endorsement of solid elected officials in the area, like Tom McClintock representing the 4th Congressional District, State Senator, Tony Strickland, and Ventura County 4th District Supervisor, Peter Foy.

Most of us know (or should know) that not all PACs are “bad”. For example, we have the AARP, an advocacy group, the NAACP, an advocacy group, the National Chamber of Commerce, an advocacy group and the list goes on and on. To confuse these groups with something negative is a serious misunderstanding of the facts.

Because they represent the people and the small businesses in our country and state, I want the candidate that has already received the support of National Advocacy Groups in his chosen career field. It demonstrates their confidence in him as an individual businessman likewise their support for related businesses in the district. These are all advocacy groups that represent the little guy (individuals and businesses) against abuses by big insurance carriers, with whom they are NOT affiliated.

Having done my homework, I am glad I know who is behind Mr. Davidson and the good things they are saying and doing for his campaign. All the rest, just fall short.

State Senator Tony Strickland backs John Davidson for Congress

Tony Strickland to serve as honorary Co-Chairman for the campaign

Santa Barbara – Small business owner and 23rd District congressional candidate John Davidson today announced the support of State Senator Tony Strickland.

Strickland stated, “I have known John for many years, and can vouch that he is a true conservative who will not be changed by Washington. As a candidate John has the grassroots support, the campaign, and the drive necessary to defeat Lois Capps. More importantly, John has the practical real world experience necessary to tackle the complex problems that will be waiting for him in Washington when elected.”

Davidson stated, “Tony Strickland is one of the states most respected conservative leaders, to have him serve as an honorary co-chairman of my campaign is a great honor.”

Tony Strickland currently serves as a State Senator for District 19, which includes portions of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles Counties. Prior to joining the Senate, Tony served in the California State Assembly for the maximum six year term from 1998-2004.

John Davidson is the founder and president of Davidson Insurance & Financial Services, Inc. In 2006, he was elected President of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), a $20 million professional association representing 200,000 members and their associates.
OPEN QUESTION TO ALL CANDIDATES: TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS EXPERIENCE?
(Note, I have sent a direct note to candidates who are members of this site and invited them to participate, as well as notified Mr. Dave Stockdale, via his website of the availability of the debate videos, as well as an invitation to join the site so he also can participate in the discussions.)

I believe that business experience, and the ability to identify with and understand the challenges facing the small business owner is a strong asset for a potential Congressman. My questions are regarding your experience as a businessman and have several parts:

1. Being the Owner, President, or Chief Executive Officer of a company; you have a lot of responsibilities. Can you tell me the names of companies you own or have owned, and not including your immediate family, how many paid employees work or worked for your company/s?

2. Are your company/s incorporated? Are your company/s a 501(c)(3) entities?

3. Without disclosing confidential information, can you tell us your approximate gross annual revenue?

4. How do you rank/compare your company/s with others in your industry? (Deliberately open-ended)

5. How does your experience with your company/s specifically help you to understand the needs of the small business person in Ventura County and the 23rd Congressional District?
Today, I noticed that Dave Stockdale has joined this site. Welcome Dave!

All of the candidates for the 23rd District Congressional seat, according to their campaign literature, have good business experience. It will be interesting to hear their stories here. Come on now, who is going to be the first to tell us his/her business experience?
I have deliberately stayed out of the 'blogs' here because the information/accusations being put here by others who do not know me( specifically Ms. Mac Donald who works for Clark's campaign) is clearly being done for political purposes. I think the citizens of the district deserve to know the truth about all the candidates as they formulate their decisions regarding their vote. I will put my verifiable resume up against anyone, anytime.

To address the questions that have been posed by Rick Coplin, I will provide the following answers for your consideration of my qualifications to be the next Republican to represent this district in November.

1. I have been a small business owner since 1981 selling Life, Health, Disability Insurance as well as Mutual Funds and annuities. My contracts are directly with the many Life & Health Insurance Companies that we work with (approximately 25 different companies). I am licensed to sell products in 7 states at this time and currently hold both Insurance Licenses and Series 6 & 63 Securies Licenses. These licenses require that I comply with significant legal and regulatory oversite, ongoing testing and continuing education requirements in order to maintain them.

2.Our business started as a sole proprietorship in 1981 employing two people and has grown to employ four full and part time employees. We are now a 'C' Corporation (as of 2002) incorporated in California.

3. Without revealing confidential information, we generate Gross Sales in the $5 Million range not including any of our securities business and we have maintaind a renewal persistency of about 96% on our block of business over the past 28 years. Our clients business makeup consists of everything from small building/contractors, Legal and accounting firms, to a significant group of Medical Doctors, Dentists and other professionals. We also insure a large number of Police officers, teachers, firefighters and the entertainment industry.

4. Our company has consistently performed as a 'top producer' for many of the companies that we represent both here in California and across the company. One measure of consistent, high level production that is recognized in the Life Insurance Industry, is membership in the MDRT Organization. This is a Worldwide Organization that recognizes the top 1% of all producers, Worldwide. I have been a member of that organization for 25 years. Additionally, I was a main platform presenter at the MDRT Convention in Denver in June 2007 where I address over 8,000 members (translated into 47 languages).

5. My entire 30 year career has been devoted to meeting the needs of my clients in helping them achieve financial security and effective business planning. Over that time I have helped thousands of small business owners with their business and personal insurance planning needs. This includes providing employee benefits, establishing long and short term business modles, setting up succession plans and establishing buy-sell agreements & their funding options.

Alos, I have worked as a consultant in that capacity in providing select benefits to three different Cities covering multiple thousands of employees and working with both Management and Labor Unions.

I have delivered Millions of dollars to clients in claims and retirement benefits over the past 28 years and I fully understand how businees run and what their needs are.

In addition to my extensive business experience, I have been involved as a volunteer in my professional Association for over 27 years keeping informed of changes within the financial services industry at the Local, State and National levels during that time.

My first involvement was as a local chapter board member in 1983 leading to being elected President in the San Fernando Valley (696 members) in 1988. I waselected to serve as the Regional Trustee covering the area from San Luis Obispo to Van Nuys and east to Antelope Valley. That was the beginning of my involvement in the 'political arena' where I learned how to develop relationships with City Council members, County Supervisors and representatives in the State Assembly and Senate. Later that developed into working relationships with community leaders who eventually became members of Congress who I knew from those early days.

Conservative, principles leaders like Tom McClintock, that I have known since he was a freshman in the Assembly are now memebrs of Congress. Others, like Tony Strickland, who started as a staffer for Tom, are now State Senators...it is all about relationship building skills.

My volunteer efforts eventually led to my election as President of the California Association of Life Underwriters in 1999-2000. This was the largest Professional Association of Insurance Agents in the country. I worked along side the professional staff of eight, hired the executive V.P and made significant changes to this non-profit corporation during my years on the executive committee and as president.

Because of my leadership skills, I was asked to serve on the National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors board of Trustees and I was elected by the National Council beginning in September 2001. This is the largest, oldest and most prestegious professional organization in the Insurance Industry representing over 200,000 members and their associates with 700 chapters nationwide.

The professsional staff of 90 employees was managed by a paid CEO/Executive V.P. and operated both a for profit coproration (primarily for the magazine and non-dues revenue) and the not for profit side attending to memebr benefits, education and training of volunteer leaders and the membership.

As president of this $20 Million operation, my role was to represent the agents and the consumers that we all serve. That required me to interact with many different industry related organizations such as :
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (representing States Rights of Insurance Related Regulations and products); The American Council of Life Insurers, The Association of Advanced Life Underwriters, The National Association of Health Underwriters, The Society of Financial Services Professionals, The National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies, The Professional Insurance Agents of America, Certified Financial Planners and many more.

I worked extensively with the executive committees, volunteers, paid professional staff on issues impacting consumers, company products and the agents that serve our clients. It is that significant experience that gives me a great understanding of not only what impacts small business here in California but also the impact that regulations have on the development of consumer products and the Legislative impact both domestically and internationally of those products.

This experience makes me uniquely qualified in the key areas of: Health Care Reform, Regulatory Reform, Tax reform and small business development that are at the forefront of discussions in Washington right now. None of my opponents, including Lois Capps, has this knowledge or experience which is critical as we look to make substantial changes.

All this information is verifiable by contacting any of the organizations that I haved listed or in checking the hsitorical data.

I appreciate the opportunity to shed a little light on the questions that you posed and hope that the voters will research the information and claims of all the candidates to see what the truth is regarding claims of leadership positions and titles held( CEO of certain organizations, etc) and check the validity of those organizations.

The truth will speak for itself and I an confident that the voters are smart enough to make a good decision based on those findings.

Thanks,
JOHN
First, if I have stated anything false, I would like to know what it might be. Yes, according to the constitution you don't have to live in the district. However, it certainly helps. And yes, the lines in the 23rd district have changed many times over the years but Davidson has never lived north of Santa Barbara. This is beginning to sound like a Blumenthalism. I served in Viet Nam, no I didn't but I was in the service. Also, do we really want someone who spends so much time interacting with politicians in Sacramento and D.C. instead of listening to the voters and what they might have to say.

Yes, I work for Clark Vandeventer but I didn't even know who he was until he held the healthcare forum last fall and did not offically meet him until introduced by a friend right before he announced his candidacy. I don't have a lifelong friendship at stake. I just know this is an incredibly honest individual who is interested in doing what is right for the country and not personal gain and power.
Karen: The tone of your remarks, including the totally unfair shot of comparing John to a lying Blumenthal, is totally unacceptable here. Stop that or you are off this site.

Other candidates have told me that they hesitate to participate in the forum because of such behavior.
'
John didn't keep moving the district lines-- our common opponent did. As I understand it, as president of a large association of agents (not insurance companies), it was part his job to interact on their behalf. Legislators must also interact with other legislators to get things done, Does that mean that none should ever be re-elected? Part of Clark's job was to solicit contributions from people. Does that mean that he is forever beholden to those people and too sullied to represent The People now? I don't think so.

We have some very fine candidates who want badly to win and serve the country. However, I am sure that they will all join me in agreeing that bad behavior is NOT the way to accomplish this. I never even heard of any of the candidates before, but have come to know them all a little bit and am grateful that they are stepping forward in these terrible times to DO something.
Ms. MacDonald, Just a refresher, you said for the longest time, that Mr. Davidson was a lobbyist, and as we all know, that is false.

Your cheap shot about the "Blumenthalism" is out of line. Mr. Blumenthal overtly lied about his Viet Nam service. Are you insinuating that Mr. Davidson has lied? Then why make such a petty comment if you are not claiming it to be true? Be specific please.

John Davidson and Tom Watson DID serve in our country's military and put their lives at risk for our country. I can't speak to Ms. Miller, or Dave Stockdale, but Mr. Vandeventer being an intern at the Reagan Ranch can hardly be considered putting your life on the line. Hey, at least Mr. Blumenthal served!

Can we get back to this discussion: tell us something about the questions asked here about business experience please?

George, I didn't say John moved the lines. Don't twist what I've said. Also, I haven't seen you at any of the other forums to hear what the candidates are saying. There have been some definite misrepresentations--if you prefer that word. I hesitated to comment on John's lengthy resume for many reasons. I also don't appreciate having my opinion being expressed as bad behavior. So since there are only a couple people on this site I will busy myself with other activities.
When did I say that you said John moved the lines? You compared him to Blumenthal and backed it up with nothing.

This site had nearly 30,000 visits in its first month and is only two months old last week.

I have been to six different Dist 23 Congressional events, including one that we planned and sponsored on May 11. I will be going to another one tonight. I also watched videos of other events and have personally talked to all five candidates-- much more than the average voter ever does. I also made arrangements to provide 2 1/2 hrs of debate videos on the Internet via this site. You're welcome.

Since you are scaring people off the discussion groups, it might be better if Clark used someone else.
Hi Gang,
Guess its my turn to add my two cents. I will answer Richard's questions.

1. I am a co-owner of my company and an investor as well as VP of Sales. Our company is a venture capital based start-up company in the wireless component market and is known as Agile. We typically have between 12-15 employees. Mostly PhD and Masters level engineers.
2. The company is a C-Corp.
3. Several million per year.
4. We are creating a new market for tunable wireless components, we have one significant competitor pursuing a similar technical approach that has raised over $100M in VC money and several companies pursuing different technical approaches. We are the most technically advanced and have the most market traction in the commercial wireless handset market which is the largest consumer product market in the world. Over 1 Billion wireless handsets are sold each year.
5. Trying to start and run a high tech manufacturing company in CA could not be any more difficult. It is hard enough trying to peel back the frontiers of science without having to fight our own government in the process. CA is driving businesses such as mine out of CA and forcing us to find lower cost manufacturing areas. This hurts CA and our country. The government is largely to blame for this, regulations cost this state about $500B per year in lost economic activity and millions of jobs. High tech entrepreneurial start-ups have been a huge engine of growth for this state and our nation and we are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. I know all to well what works and doesn't work, this is my second start-up. We need to unshackle the American entrepreneur and all will be well.

Tom
