Will YOU Save Freedom? Catch The Tea Party Wave

The House of Representatives has been mostly in Democrat hands since WWII, with a couple of respites.  The 2010 elections were a major, historic rout by the Republicans, putting them firmly in control.  This was more of a strong backlash to the extreme Progressive tendencies of the Obama, Pelosi, Reid regime than any great love for Republicans.  So far, they have done better than the Democrats, but are largely a big, cowardly disappointment, funding Obamacare, making mostly illusory cuts, not investigating the Obama excesses, etc.

April, 2010: CA 36th District had a race. Liberal Jane Harmon won re-election in November 2010 and resigned shortly thereafter to join a Liberal think tank, which will cost the state $3MM to hold a special election, About 10 candidates are running, including Debra Bowen (D), current secretary of State. Conservative Craig Huey ran as a Republican, also garnering Libertarian endorsements.  Harman won special election.

2012 candidates have already have  positioned themselves, developing signature issues, stump speeches and lining up support.

Chris Mitchum and Abel Maldonado (brought you Prop 14 and higher taxes), are lining up to oppose Lois Capps (D, Outer Space) in the current CA District 26, which is more competitive than the old Dist 23.  Watson dropped out, to pursue business/personal interests.

Tony Strickalnd is running as the only 26 Dist Republican against "nonpartisan" (LOL!) Linda parks and a gaggle of Democrats. Dem's are pressuring candidates to drop out to avoid splitting the vote in the new nightmare top 2 primary system they created.

Democrats: carpetbagger Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, Oak Park (via People's Republik of Santa Monica); Harbor Commissioner Jess Herrera, Oxnard; real estate broker Al Goldberg, Ventura; businessman David Cruz Thayne, Westlake Village.

Mark Reed has been showing his face at Tea Party meetings and other events. He intends to run against Brad Sherman again.

Redistricting is likely to significantly affect many races.

Bob, I consider it satire, but forgive me if I crossed the line. Sometimes the passion of the moment I loose perspective. I did not intend to be hurtful.

I totally agree that removing Ms. Capps from office is the priority and you can on me to do my part to bring the challengers together to accommplish that goal.
Richard, Relax, these are the same post from the other day on the message board, just being brought over to the new board.
Yes. I am trying to recreate this so any new readers can follow. Richard has copied all his posts over but his first response to Alicia's post. Without that one the next few don't make sense. Please post that one.

I wanted to weigh in and agree with Alisa. I have done my own research and respectfully, Richard, you are not correct in your assertions.

1. Mr. Davidson IS a lobbyist.
He was the president of the NAIFA. Which is an organization whose purpose is to lobby congress on behalf of the insurance industry. While I don't know if he was paid for that, I suspect he was, payment isn't a qualification to be considered a lobbyist.
Lobbying (also Lobby) is a form of advocacy with the intention of influencing decisions made by legislators and officials in the government by individuals, other legislators, constituents, or advocacy groups. A lobbyist is a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest or a member of a lobby. Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying that has become influential on policy.

Here is an excerpt of the annual report from the NAIFA from one of the years Mr. Davidson was president. I am attaching the document and this is from page 3. There are plenty of other examples of the organization's lobbying efforts on that page.

"NAIFA was in the forefront of groups successfully lobbying Congress to allow businesses to continue to fax information to their customers"

I personally think lobbying is an important part of our political system, the fact of the matter is that in today's political environment it is looked upon as being very bad. At another time this may not have been a big deal but you can bet that the DNC will hammer this point to no end.
That coupled with the fact that he is associated with the health insurance industry is a political nightmare. Again at another time it wouldn't have been an issue, but when so many democrats and independents feel like the insurance companies are to blame for the state of healthcare and the economy, this is a serious problem for Mr. Davidson.

2. The money.
I am attaching excerpts from the FEC. You will notice that Mr. Davidson has received NO money from the RNC and all the money from PACs comes from the insurance industry. If you look closely at the full report you will see that most of the individual contributions are from members of the insurance industry as well. Much of that money has come from not only outside the district, but from across the country. The money trail is very important because it sometimes shows who the candidate will be beholden to once in office. We need a representative who isn't in the pocket of any special interest groups. Also, when you go down the list, only TWO donations are from the district. Yes, I understand about minimums and maximums but that tells you a lot. Please click on the link on the left for more detailed information. We have enough special interest people in D.C. now--we don't need another person.

DAVIDSON, JOHN H0CA23100
Office: HOUSE
Party: REPUBLICAN PARTY Election: 2010
State: CALIFORNIA District: 23

FINANCIAL SUMMARY
From: 01/01/2009 To: 03/31/2010
I. RECEIPTS
Itemized Individual Contributions $53,450
Unitemized Individual Contributions $7,840

Party Committees Contributions $0
Other Committees Contributions $10,500
Candidate Contributions $8,297
TOTAL CONTRIBUTIONS $80,087

Transfers from Authorized Committees $0

Candidate Loans $22,000
Other Loans $0
TOTAL LOANS $22,000

Operating Expenditures Offsets $0
Other Receipts $0

TOTAL RECEIPTS $102,087

As far as the total money raised, Mr. Davidson has been raising money since December. Mr. Vandeventer just started in March. If you compare the two figures over time Mr. Vandeventer is out-raising Mr. Davidson. Especially when you take into consideration that Mr. Davidson had an outstanding loan of $22,000 and put 30k of his own money in, Mr. Vandeventer is far outpacing Mr. Davidson.
I also take offense that you are implying only candidates who put lots of money into their campaign are serious. Many people aren't in the position that Mr. Davidson is and would you exclude anyone who isn't in that position from running? This country is made up of people from all walks of life and our district is made up of people from all financial situations. Those people deserve to be represented too.
Mr. Vandeventer's background is in fundraising. He was not only an executive of an orginization, but he helped raise over 20 million dollars to build the Reagan Ranch Center here in Santa Barbara. If you want to talk about credentials to raise money I believe that Mr. Vandeventer has that won.
I've been involved in politics for 30 years and from the first time I met Clark I found him to be most honest and straightforward. While walking precincts with him, he has never dodged a question from a voter or varied from his stances even though they may differ from what a voter wanted to hear. We all need to be informed.

Glad we are ultimately on the same team. Tough picking up on satire and sarcasm on message boards and e-mail. Sorry for my misinterpretation. Take care and best wishes.
(Copied From Earlier Discussion)
You and Davidson seem to be quite focused on who can raise the most money. Again, if you will look at where Davidson has raised money so far you can see where his allegiance might be. Also, you note Clark has worked for nonprofits--last time I checked, the government was supposed to be a nonprofit.
(Copied From Other Board-From Alisa Ontiveros)
Mr. Coplin,
I understand that as Mr. Davidson's friend you feel the need to support him.
I supposed that the information I posted was as well-known to others as it is to me. The fact that he may or may not have been paid does not mean he was not a lobbyist. If I knew my information was incorrect, I would definitely retract it.
My main reason for posting this was because these are definitely the things the Democrats will exploit.
I must take offense with your implying that a candidate must be wealthy--able to put in his own money. From what I understand, Clark only started campaigning back in March, so they are doing pretty well from what I can see. :)
Richard,
Just wanted to clarify a few points.
1. I believe that lobbying is an important part of our political system. I don't believe that there is anything wrong with what Mr. Davidson did, and he probably did many good things through that organization.
My point is that in the current political climate it is a very bad thing. It has very negative associations and will not play well in the general election.
I believe that the DNC and PACs that are going to be behind Mrs. Capps will use this information to attack him and we won't have a chance to explain to all the voters that he was doing it for a good cause. We won't have 500 words to tell the voters that he is different.
As far as Mr. Davidson not being a lobbyist I am not following your logic. All I am taking from your post is that he isn't a lobbyist now, but was a lobbyist before.

2. Mr. Vandeventer never worked for the Reagan Library.

3. I resent you classifying this discussion as mud-slinging and half truths. I have backed up every point I have made with hard evidence. Just because information does not support your or your candidates opinions does not mean it is a half-truth or mud-slinging.
You say it won't play well in a general election, but you use it here against a fellow Republican. You understimate John's ability to handle himself with truth against this kind of attack if it should come from Ms. Capps.

I stand corrected. I intended to say the Reagan Ranch of course.

I will wait until you have had a chance to read a more recent post of mine before responding to your point #3. I think you may have the same or stronger feelings after reading it.
Alisa, respectfully, John Davidson is NOT a lobbyist for "big insurance". I have known him for over 20 years. He does not get paid to lobby and you should provide some support for that statement or retract it.

Also, you state that most of his money comes from "big insurance" and that is also untrue and should be retracted by you.

Here are the facts from Open Secrets.org regarding Mr Davidson and Mr Vandeventer. Mr Davidson has received support from the RNC and that accounts for most of the PAC 10% of his contributions raised. [NOTE: As originally posted, this comment was in error. I will note here that the correction is that Mr. Davidson DID NOT receive support from the RNC and that he has received 10% of his overall funds from PACs] He has out raised your candidate by nearly double in individual contributions and also invested $30K of his own money (put your money where your mouth is) in his campaign effort whereas Mr Vandeventer has invested $125 dollars of his own money.

Your statements are just not supported by the facts. Using the devil term "big insurance" as if it were some bad association is rediculous and is making an argument by using guilt by association.

Retire Lois Capps District 23 Candidates' Debate Exceeded Expectations

Please give us your comments, statements on the debate.
Here is a list of questions addressed at our Retire Lois Capps Candidates' Debate on May 11. Feel free to send us additional questions. We have also passed along the original, long list of questions submitted before the debate, which was used to formulate the main questions. Time constraints prevented a full consideration, but if candidates want to respond to them on this page, that would be fine.

May 11 District 23 Congressional Candidate Debate Summarized Questions

Energy: The United States is the world’s largest consumer of energy and is dangerously dependent on foreign sources of oil. What is your energy policy, including oil, gas, coal, nuclear, renewables? Please address offshore drilling and the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in your response.

Unemployment: The government recently stated that the new unemployment rate has risen to 9.9%. What do you think is the real unemployment rate and what can be done by the government and the private sector to increase employment?

Healthcare: What do you see as the biggest problems with Obamacare? if elected to Congress, would you help repeal it, and what would you replace it with?

Immigration: Summarize your position on Immigration: For too many years, the de facto immigration policy has differed from our laws and majority of constituents’ wishes. How can we ensure that:
- laws are enforced, while providing needed labor and protecting jobs for legal residents?
- taxpayer funds are only spent for legally deserved entitlements?
- criminals are removed?
- a path to citizenship is provided for those that observe our laws and are needed by our society?

Financial/Economy: The U.S. has the most severe financial and economic problems since the Great Depression. Although economic activity is increasing, the underlying financial, credit and debt problems have not improved—in fact debt is rapidly increasing. While we can’t change the past, what should we do going forward?
- Spending/taxes/deficits?
- Monetary policy?
- Which economist makes the most sense?

Constitution: What is the proper role of the Constitution in modern government and how to ensure it? Your opinion of the Tenth Amendment “nullification” movement and its prospects of success?

Electability: Why should YOU be the one we choose to represent the 23Rd district? How do you address electability issues, such as representing the wishes of constituents, skills to run and serve, along with organization and campaign financing to win?

Personal: Tell us what your favorite activities are, what you read and who your favorite public figures are, past or present, public or private.

National security: What are your summarized thoughts on national security-- terrorism, nuclear proliferation, cyber-war, Iraq-Pak-Afghanistan, China?

Lightning Round (30 SECOND ANSWERS):
Term limits?
Pro-choice or pro-life?
Wisdom/Experience vs. youth/enthusiasm?
Top 3 priorities in Congress?
Is Obama and/or his czars socialists?
Should problems be fixed w/ new laws or repeal of old laws?
What can a freshman Congressman get done?

- No candidate picked up ON the question about monetary policy and ran with it. Several of our attendees told me that they want to hear more about candidates’ thoughts on the Federal Reserve and monetary policy.

Audience Questions we didn’t get to:
Are you voting for Meg Whitman or Steve Poizner? (WHAT ABOUT OTHERS? -ed.)
Can the benefits politicians have given themselves be reduced or canceled?
What are the limits of Congressional delegation of power to the regulatory agencies?
Do you support the Arizona immigration law?
The John Adams Project has turned over CIA Agents information over to Al Qaeda detainees, one of which was caught with a DVD of CIA agents information. Do you support trying anyone involved with this with treason?
What special thing is it going to take to beat Lois Capps?
Please address states’ rights vs federal overreaching especially to immigration enforcement and abortion.
