Today Ted Cruz, the fiery Texas Senator announced he is running for President.
Technically, he announced that at Midnight on his Twitter feed. He will make a speech today at Liberty University that will set the tone for his campaign.
Cruz chose today, the fifth anniversary of the signing of Obamacare as the date for his announcement.
He chose Liberty University for a reason too.
He is sending a message.
But there is one overwhelming reason why Ted Cruz is so important this year.
What is it? Ted Cruz is the only electable Republican.
“Electability” is a word the squishy moderates throw around a lot.
They have tried to coopt the term and the concept.
They love to claim only the establishment moderate can win.
Since the establishment moderates have lost four of the last six presidential elections and the last blow out was in 1988, when America thought it was getting Ronald Reagan’s third term, it is safe to say that concept is very much overrated.
But the electability label does belong to Ted Cruz.
But not for the reason most people think. Electability does not mean sacrificing one’s beliefs.
It means having a strategy to win and it means throwing out old strategies that don’t work.
For twenty years or more the GOP has been handcuffed with the consultant class. They make millions off of candidates and campaigns and all they do is provide a recipe for failure.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate who seems willing to throw away the GOP consultant playbook. That playbook tells candidates to run a tofu campaign, devoid of content.
It gives voters no reason to get excited about the campaign.
They also tell Republicans not to try and even compete for blue states.
Since 1992, there have been 18 States and the District of Columbia that have gone blue in every one of those six presidential elections.
That is a total of 242 electoral votes.
All the Democrat has to do is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in Florida.
They pick up that state’s 29 electoral votes and it is game over.
The only way a Republican wins is to throw out the GOP playbook.
The only candidate out there who will do that is Ted Cruz.
If the Republicans do not win in 2016, Florida will become a blue state and it will be impossible for a Republican to ever win the Presidency again.
That is what is at stake in this election and that is why Ted Cruz is so important.
