My Grandfather was a diplomat from Bulgaria in Berlin during WW2. When they Soviets took over Bulgaria, they summoned all diplomats back to Bulgaria. From the Embassy in Berlin, all but 4 went back, the ambassador himself, my Grandfather. Those who went back were shot along with several thousand other public employees of the former government.
Mind you it was not an easy decision to go back - they went from being diplomats to refugees, but my grandfather saw something that his colleagues apparently missed. They paid with their lives.
