Will YOU Save Freedom? Catch The Tea Party Wave

"The penalty for not participating in politics is to be governed by your inferiors." - Plato

The Presidency is the big political prize. With the worst "president" ever as the incumbent, who is already campaigning, you would think he is in deep trouble, but he could actually win, especially if the GOP fumbles-- and they did.

Looks like we have Barack Hussein Obama-Soetoro-Soebarkah-Bounel back and he will be much worse the second time around, full of himself, arrogant, spoiling for revenge, no more elections, "flexibility" for Vladmir, making energy prices "skyrocket," increasing Socialism, deploying Czars, borrowing, spending, QE, taxes,Supreme Court "Justices," especially if the Senate rolls over like last term.

For all practical purposes, we are down to only two viable candidates, AKA Obama and Romney. The battle is on.

Mitt Romney, Nominated by GOP 8-28-12

Mitt Picks Paul Ryan for VP

Gary Johnson, Libertarian Nominee

Ed Noonan, CA AIP Nominee

A stacked AIP convention ignored the will of the voters and picked Tom Hoefling as its nominee. Why should they be any different from the Republicrats?

- Mitt Romney- W- Bright, highly successful businessman/consultant, Romneycare issue, baggage, flip-flopped on choice, cap/trade, amnesty, now denying "warming," or is he? Opposes SB1070, RINO. Polling well. Choice of GOP hierarchy. Possible eligibility questions. Won NH, 2nd in SC. Won FL big.  CA Nominee and national nominee as of 8-28-12- Congrats!

- Gary Johnson- W- Former successful businessman (construction), 2-time former New Mexico Governor, anti-tax, anti-bureaucracy, Libertarian, pro-choice, more, more, more. Barred from debates. Left GOP to run as Libertarian. CA Nominee and national nominee- Congrats!

- Ed Noonan-W- American Independent Party. Constitutional Conservative. Challenges Obama's eligibility. Shares some of Ron Paul's monetary policy views, but more Conservative overall.  CA AIP Nominee- Congrats!

- Laurie Roth-W- American Independent Party- Singer, songwriter, talk show hostess (IRN-USA), actively challenges Obama's eligibility, work to make America energy independent, stop drug trade, go to only 2% consumption tax.

- John Dummett- W- CA govt. programmer, doesn't seem to have many qualifications, except common sense and intelligence, which I suppose puts him ahead of the incumbent, whose eligibility he actively  challenges, along with the 16th Amendment.

As far as I know, this only includes Republican and Democrat nominees.- G.M.

So, we're down to Romney. John Dummett is still running, but the big parties and media will make sure you don't hear much about him.  The third party candidates lack money, support and publicity to do much. Cody Robert Judy is the only opposition Democrat running with any visibility at all, but not TV or debates. Instead, he is more in the courts, suing Obama over his ineligibility to run, as are candidates such as Ed Noonan (AIP), Laurie Roth (I).  Republicans are eerily silent about that 300 lb. gorilla. even with very strong evidence to back it up. Unfortunately, millions are expected not to vote over their dissatisfaction with Progressive Republican nominee Romney. We caution you about that. PLEASE consider the alternative.  Are you willing to put an ineligible incumbent back in office to make your point?

Yes, Virginia, There is a Republican Establishment (And It’s Suicidal)

by Ben Johnson

http://www.impeachobamacampaign.com/yes-virginia-there-is-a-republi...

I stand by what I wrote above...but will read your lengthy articles after Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all!!

Politico is nothing more than a hit rag for the Washington Post that founded it as a way to smear conservatives without getting their hands dirty.  Look at what they did to Herman Cain.  If one were looking for a racist publication one would have to look no further than Politico.

The prospect of terrifying the Rudy McRomney Republicrat ruling class thrills me even more than getting rid of Osama Barak. Rush Limbaugh has said that the Republican Party would rather lose with a liberal than win with a conservative/constitutionalist.  He is right, as always.   Check out this article;

From TownHall.com:

The Buchanan Treatment Won't Work on Ron Paul

Dec 24, 2011

Should Ron Paul win the Iowa Caucuses, the media narrative is the Republican Party establishment will go scorched earth on the quirky libertarian Texas Congressman, just as they did Pat Buchanan back in the day.

But unlike that successful kamikaze mission of yesteryear, this one won’t work. In fact, if the Republican Party establishment chooses to go down that road they might just propel Paul to the nomination.

That’s because Ron Paul isn’t Pat Buchanan, and the environment this go-around is dramatically different than it was back then for two reasons.

First of all, Paul’s campaign apparatus is dramatically superior to anything Buchanan ever had. His Iowa Caucus campaign is a well-oiled machine, and the envy of the entire process. They’re running the best commercials. They’re the best organized. They’re the most loyal. And look beyond Iowa, too. Paul wins straw polls all over the country, including CPAC and even at the 2011 Values Voters Summit. I know several of these people who are the masterminds of Paul’s organization, and these folks don’t put their phasers on stun when it comes to their opponents and know what they’re doing. They’re not kooks, they’re sharp cookies and losing is not an option in their strategy. They have no problem burning down the entire system, because they distrust it anyway.

Buchanan still needed the system. He still needed jobs on cable news networks or help publishing/selling his books and columns. Paul isn’t running to reform the system. He’s running to reboot it. Buchanan has never had an organization this good. In fact, no insurgent candidate in modern American political history has had an organization this professional and well-funded.

Second, voter angst and anger towards Washington and Republicrats in general is at an all-time high. In 2004 the voters gave George W. Bush and the Republicans control of Washington. In 2006 they made Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House. In 2008 they made Barack Obama President of the United States. In 2010 they fired over 700 Democrats running for re-election around the country. Meanwhile, marriage continues to remain undefeated at the ballot box whenever pro-homosexual activists attempt to challenge it, but at the same time the American people seem content with normalizing homosexual behavior in popular culture.

That’s a schizophrenic swing of energy and emotion in less than one decade. In just six years the American people voted for a quasi-socialist welfare state they didn’t want to have to pay for, and a return to Judeo-Christian moral values they themselves don’t want to be accountable to.

That tells me the American people are looking for someone – literally anyone – to show some leadership on the issues. Voters aren’t satisfied after trying both parties’ milquetoast ruling class, and are looking to drain the swamp.

Enter Ron Paul.

Paul has already been heavily vetted. He’s a national figure, who has run for president several times and has been running for the last five years. His quirks are known. His positions are known. Believing the American people will not vote for someone who wants to return us to 1789, is like believing the American people will never vote for someone who wants us to look like West Germany circa 1978 when they just did.

We are a confused people. We know what we’re supposed to be and supposed to look like, and yet we have no idea for how to get there. We lack the spiritual and moral foundation to rebuild the wall, if you will. Minus a Nehemiah showing the way, a civilization will either choose one of two paths—self-indulgence and ultimately self-destruction, or hit the control-alt-delete button in order to start over again.

The liberals represent the former, and Paul and his libertarian brigade represent the latter.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Make no mistake—voters are desperate. Therefore, trying to give Paul the Buchanan treatment will actually entrench Paul’s support all the more, because voters don’t trust the source of the attacks. It’s impossible to underestimate how little regard the American people have for political parties, and the Republicrat ruling class and its crony capitalism. They will see Buchanan-type attacks against Paul as the system trying to defend its indefensible self, and rally to him all the more. Folks are much angrier and desperate then they were during Buchanan’s presidential runs. Thus, the crankier and crazier Paul sounds the more they’ll love him.

He’ll be getting attacked by all the people they can’t stand and don’t trust.

The peasants want to storm the Bastille, and in many respects the philosophy Paul is espousing of individualized liberty for the sake of self is right out of the French Revolution—so it fits the mood of the country perfectly.

This brings us to how to defeat Paul.

Paul is a man with powerful ideas, some very good and some very bad. If human history has taught us one thing it’s that bad powerful ideas can only be defeated by good powerful ideas.

Instead of trying to cram milquetoast flip-floppers down voters’ throats, the Republican Party needs to champion candidates who have good powerful ideas about how to return to the roots of the American Revolution—which begins with the premise individuals have liberty and rights from God alone, and the role of government is to protect those God-given rights and then get out of the way to allow liberty to flourish.

The more Rudy McRomneys the Republican Party serves up, the more popular someone like Paul will become. Frustrated voters will use Paul as a blunt instrument, or maybe even a sharp object, to attack a failed system with.

The Republicrats deserve Ron Paul. The ruling class created the Ron Paul phenomenon by its own actions. And the more they persist in being tone-deaf to voters’ angst, the more likely they are to suffer at his hands.

And as much as I disagree with Paul, I’d choose him over the Republicrat ruling class any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Not exactly what I had in mind to post on Christmas, but still, it’s awesome. Zo takes off the gloves in describing why he doesn’t support Ron Paul. And it’s brutal:

And Ron Paul is worse than the open borders, pro amnesty, treasonous, completely insane John McAmnesty, for whom you most likely voted like a good Republobot, how?

Anyone would have trouble matching wits with Newt.  I really wish he could be trusted more, rather than less, than most politicians.

Re: Debates and ballot access- From The VA Attorney Geneal and debate questioner.

The entire debate can be seen without commercials by clicking here.

December 26, 2011

Dear Fellow Virginians and Friends,

While I'm taking a break for Christmas, given that the Iowa caucuses are so close, I thought it would be a good time to jot down some reflections on the Presidential debate I had the privilege to be part of earlier this month.

Also, you've probably heard by now that only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul qualified to be on Virginia's Presidential primary ballot on March 6th.  I'll address this very unfortunate circumstance toward the end of this Compass.

Three weeks ago, while many of you were at the Republican Advance, I was in New York participating in a Presidential debate on FOX as one of the three questioners with Mike Huckabee as moderator.  While I was very sorry not to be able to attend the Advance, the presidential debate was a spectacular experience, and a successful one.

When even the New York Times writes that our debate was the most substantive debate so far, you know you've achieved something, given how much they like us Republicans!

The format was not really a debate, it was more of a forum.  The candidates were up one at a time for 11 straight minutes with no other candidates on stage with them.

Each of them could watch the show live, so they each saw one another on stage.  That meant we had to come up with different questions for each candidate.  Those of you who watched would have noticed very little overlap in questions.  The only exception to this rule was our 'quickie' questions sometimes used at the end of a candidate's time slot.

For example, if they still had 20 seconds of their 11 minutes, we might ask them who their favorite founding father was (no coke vs. pepsi questions).  Gingrich said George Washington, Perry said Madison.  Two good Virginia answers.

Giving all the candidates the same amount of time had only been done once before that I know of, and that was during the South Carolina forum I attended on Labor Day.  Senator DeMint, Congressman King, and Professor George were the questioners at that event where each candidate had 22 minutes.  That forum was my own model during our discussions about how to structure our debate.  I hope this type of forum will be used more frequently in the future as it is an excellent way to give voters a great deal of information about candidates in a short amount of time.  It's also a way that our candidates can shine, rather than be torn down by questioners from MSNBC, TheWashington Post, etc., all of whom want the GOP candidate to lose anyway.

The debate prior to ours was a foreign policy debate on CBS, and Congressman Paul got a grand total of 89 seconds.  Why should he have even bothered to show up?  And how rude is it of CBS to invite him to come and then ask him almost nothing?

I understand the logic of spending more time with frontrunners, however, I found that the time with non-frontrunners provided a helpful perspective when thinking about whether I wanted either of the frontrunners as my nominee.  In other words, there was great value to equal time... not to mention it was fair, which doesn't hurt either!

The order of candidates was drawn at 4 p.m. for the 8 p.m. debate, and it went Gingrich, Santorum, Perry, Bachmann, Paul, then Romney.  Afterwards, they each had one minute for a closing statement.

As I mentioned, Governor Huckabee was the moderator and he's such a nice, down to earth person, he did a great job making all participants comfortable while still moving things along.

The two other questioners were the Attorneys General of Oklahoma and Florida, Scott Pruitt and Pam Bondi respectively.

The entire debate can be seen without commercials by clicking here.

We focused on federalism, the Constitution and executive power.  As Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said in the wrap-up comments at the close of the show, we talked more about the Constitution in that one debate than all the previous debates combined!  I think she was quite right.

So, if you are one of those that lament the lack of constitutional discussion, this was the debate for you!

I found it interesting that in all the post-debate punditry, no one asked me who did the best.  The answer might surprise you.

I thought that Rick Santorum did the best, and he came across as friendly and nice while doing it (he's been dinged for appearing sour in other debates).

Separately, Rick Perry had his best performance so far.  And while even he would acknowledge he's not a champion debater, it was good to see him do well.

I thought both frontrunners - Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney - underperformed, at least relative to the high expectations people have developed of both of them.

For my own questions, I pressed Gingrich on how he would filter out his many big-government ideas.  He basically responded that he wouldn't filter them out.  I got the sense that he thinks every idea he has is a great one, yet his history makes clear that such is not the case.  For example, did you know he wanted to get rid of the work requirement in welfare reform in the 90's?

He referred to the work requirement in welfare reform as, are you ready for this? "Right wing social engineering."  Sound familiar?

During our debate, I was trying to get some confidence that a President Gingrich wouldn't use government to pursue every idea he had.  I got no such confidence.  Actually, quite the opposite.  He came across as another big-government conservative... whatever that is.

It will probably shock all of you to know that I asked Mitt Romney about his 2006 Massachusetts health care bill.  (That's a joke for our newer subscribers)

Romney conceded that it had driven costs up in Massachusetts and that he had not foreseen what the Massachusetts legislature would do with the law later (Really? Is it really hard to foresee the Massachusetts legislature running hog wild with a new entitlement/mandate?).

However, a more subtle aspect of my back-and-forth with Governor Romney related to comparisons between the 2006 Massachusetts health care law and the 2010 federal health care law.  Most people did not pick up on the significance of how Romney positioned his 2006 health care law vis-à-vis the 2010 federal health care law.

Romney basically took the position that the Massachusetts law was good, but the federal law was bad.  His rationale was very surprising, it was that President Obama 'went too far' with the federal law.

Think about that.

Let's retain the logic, but restate it.

The 2010 federal health care law was a bad law, but the 2006 Massachusetts law did less of the same thing, so it was a good law.

When he made his statements, I was struck by what a proudly 'democrat light' position it was.

As someone who tries very hard to campaign and govern as consistently as possible with a constitutional conservative philosophy, the philosophical argument Romney made is a non sequitur.  It doesn't make sense to me to say pursuing a state takeover of health insurance is a good thing, but pursuing a national takeover of health insurance with a few more bells and whistles is a bad thing.

As you can tell, I didn't think that either Gingrich or Romney did particularly well.  Mind you, they both come across well, neither did badly, but neither of them met expectations.

Another interesting element was Congressman Paul's discussion of Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.  He takes the position that these programs are unconstitutional, and that the Supreme Court has been wrong in concluding otherwise.  So I asked him if he'd sign a budget that provided funding for these programs that he believes are unconstitutional.

Somewhat to my surprise he said "yes."  To clarify, I restated part of my question to get more explanation from him.  Interestingly, he basically said, 'look, these things have been around a long time, and even though they're unconstitutional, we'd have to work our way out of them, as cutting them off cold turkey would be too disruptive to too many people.'

Given the fact that Ron Paul is the standard for consistency in the race, one expects to hear him say 'it's unconstitutional, so we need to end it tomorrow.'  But he took a very practical approach, something that I don't think some Republicans want to credit him with being able (willing?) to do.

Given his view of the constitutionality of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, his forward-looking explanation seemed very reasonable in accounting for all of the impacts that governance consistent with his views would entail.

Participating in the debate was a great experience.  I got to know Scott Pruitt, Pam Bondi and their staffs better as we worked together to prepare.  I also got to spend some more time with Gov. Huckabee, who is just such a pleasure to work with.  And I also got to work with a bunch of the folks at FOX, producers, the "brain room," etc. who were just great to work with and from whom I learned a lot.  Finally, I came away with positive impressions of all of our candidates.

There are definitely some good people in this race, but I can't help hoping that a new conservative candidate gets in the race.  Given the schedule, it's entirely plausible.  For a good article on this possibility, check out Virginia's own Sabato's Crystal Ball.

A Note On The Virginia Ballot

As I noted above, it now appears that the only two candidates that will be on Virginia's ballot on March 6th: Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Ron Paul.  While I'm glad for them, it screams out for making our ballot more accessible.

I have had the opportunity to talk to a number of the candidates and their campaigns in the last month or so, and the Bachmann folks tell me that Virginia is the third hardest ballot access state in the country.  I personally don't think that's a good thing.

To get on the ballot, a presidential candidate has to collect 10,000 legitimate signatures across Virginia – county by county and city by city – with at least 400 legitimate signatures in each congressional district.  Virginia's State Board of Elections recommends that campaigns come in with over 15,000 signatures, including over 700 from each congressional district given what a high proportion of signatures typically fail some requirement or another.

I would throw out for consideration that we should lower our requirements to 100 legitimate signatures per congressional district.

Let's face it, absent a serious write-in challenge from some other candidate, Virginia won't be nearly as 'fought over' as it should be in the midst of such a wide open nomination contest.  Our own laws have reduced our relevance.  Sad.

I hope our new GOP majorities will fix this problem so that neither party confronts it again.  I for one would like Virginia to be heard from in our nomination process, and I'm sure you would too.

Holidays

Hanukkah began last Tuesday at sundown, so Happy Hanukkah to all of our Jewish readers, and I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas yesterday!

Ken Cuccinelli, II

FYI, can't read the copy on the right side so much of this is unintelligible.

GOP manipulates Virginia ballot rules at last minute!

Just in from Doug Ross:

ACTION ALERT: Virginia GOP Changed Ballot Access Rules Last Month; ...

Based upon several reliable reports at RedState, it would appear that Virginia's GOP establishment changed the rules of ballot access just last month. Front-runner Newt Gingrich, for one, saw his campaign hurt badly by reports that it bungled the Virginia ballot process which saw he and Rick Perry excluded despite each turning in over 10,000 signatures. But if the new reports are true, the state GOP has a hell of a lot to account for.

Moe Lane provides the introduction:

http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2011/12/26/did-the-va-gop-change-the-rules-on-primary-ballot-access-in-november-2011/...the very short version is that the VA GOP only certified MittRomney and Ron Paul for its primary ballot. Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich both had too many signatures tossed; Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum, and Michele Bachmann didn’t even try. Of the seven candidates, one (Romney) had more than enough signatures (15K) to bypass the verification process entirely. All of this has caused a lot of agitation among Republicans following the primary process, of course; and not just from people who disapprove of what the VA GOP has done...

...There has been a good deal of defending of the outcome; and one argument heavily used in this defense has been that the campaigns all knew the rules and that previous Republican campaigns were able to get on the ballot, so clearly a competent current Republican campaign should have done so.

One small problem with that: as Winger argues, the rules were allegedly drastically changed. In November of this year.

So what changed?

...prior to the 2012 elections it was Republican party policy in Virginia to simply deem any candidate that brought in ten thousand raw signatures as having met the primary ballot requirements under Virginian state election law.

Under these rules, of course, both Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry would have qualified easily.

And why did the rules change?

http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2011/12/26/did-the-va-gop-change-the-rules-on-primary-ballot-access-in-november-2011/...On October 24th independent state delegate candidate Michael Osborne filed suit against the Republican party of Virginia [challenging the signature review process and who performs it] ... according to Winger the VA GOP decided in response to bump up from 10K to 15K the threshold for simply deeming the requirements as being met.

...I think that John Fund’s general comment is correct: this is going to go to the courts. John was not discussing this specific wrinkle, but his larger point that Virginia’s ballot access policies have systemic problems gets a big boost when it turns out that the state party can effectively increase by fifty percent the practical threshold for ballot access – in a day, and in the middle of an existing campaign.

...If it is true that the Republican party of Virginia decided in November of 2011 to increase the threshold for automatic certification from 10K to 15K, then it is reasonable to suggest that this was a change that unfairly rewarded candidates who had previously run for President in Virginia.

Lane asserts that the state GOP has ultimate control of the ballot and could, if pressed, decide to certify Gingrich and Perry.

Either way, the issue is going to the courts.

And, either way, the Virginia GOP looks incompetent... or ill-intentioned against conservative candidates.

Action Alert: I urge you to contact the Virginia GOP and demand that they includeGingrich and Perry on the ballot. Be polite, but firm. There's no excuse for issuing new rules at the last minute that just happen to exclude the leading candidates. In fact, it's an outrage.

“consequently, that the ultimate right of the parties to the Constitution (i.e. the States), to judge whether the compact has been dangerously violated, must extend to violations by one delegated authority as well as by another--by the judiciary as well as by the executive, or the legislature.” Virginia Assembly Report 1800, James Madison.

“The States then being the parties to the constitutional compact, and in their sovereign capacity, it follows of necessity, that there can be no tribunal above their authority, to decide in the last resort, whether the compact made by them be violated; and consequently that as the parties to it, they must themselves decide in the last resort, such questions as may be of sufficient magnitude to require their interposition.” – James Madison

Only in America could liberals talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund raising event.

We need to demythologize guns before the liberal attempt to create a totemic fear of them succeeds. If the gun control mentality promoting fear of guns themselves becomes our national mentality, we would turn the clock back to the days when a warrior class ruled over the people because only they had the confidence and expertise to deploy the means of defense and coercion. The gun control agenda will turn us into a people too timid to defend themselves from our would-be masters. – Alan Keyes

How can we stand up to someone that creates a 100 dollar Federal Reserve (FR) note for 2 cents and uses the face value of the note of 100 dollars to buy a 100 dollar U.S. Security where the government has to pay them 4% in interest at the end of the year? A yearly cost of 4 FR notes where it only cost the FR 2 cents to print.

“Capital must protect itself in every possible way, both by combination and legislation. Debts must be collected, mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible. When, through the process of law, the common people lose their homes, they will become more docile and more easily governed through the strong arm of government applied by a central power of wealth under leading financiers. These truths are well known among our principal men who are now engaged in forming an imperialism to govern the world. By dividing the voter through the political party system, we can get them to expend their energies in fighting for questions of no importance. It is thus by discreet action we can secure for ourselves that which has been so well planned and so successfully accomplished.”
