By popular demand, we created this forum to cover almost any topic your heart desires. The Forum name, "Open Mike" refers to the tradition that some comedy and music clubs have of offering all comers the opportunity to perform live impromptu at their establishments, with any material they come up with that is consistent with the theme and policies of that organization (in our case, the Mission statement in "Read Me" section), We'll even consider stuff not consistent, if you can persuade us that changes are needed.
Note to readers/posters: Reader comments are in chronological, indented sequence, with the newest ones on the higher-numbered pages below. You must be registered on this site to post. You may have to scroll/page down to get to where you want to be.
No....he insisted the 16 trill was paid back. I gave his opinion some respect, as he is a very wealthy retired broker. I don't think he's pro-Fed..........so, how to find out?
Let me know what you think of Lessig's talk; it was one of the most intellectually stimulating things I have seen in a while, as well as being very easy to understand.
LOL! Trust me, Steve, no way did they pay back $16 TRILLION. That's equal to the entire USA GDP.
a trillion = $1.oo x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000.
Show me any credible document from the Fed that says they received $16,000,000,000,000.00+ in payments.
By the way, he's NOT the only person you met who's aware of the $16 TRILLION. I have been for months and you met me.
OK, here's another one: http://pastebin.com/gm2UV08D
Read this to see how to take the country back from special interests. It's VERY long, but once you see where this is going, I promise you will love it. I know it's asking a lot, but I KNOW you will want to read this. It's as much Tea Party as anything out there............
John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama all die and go to heaven. God looks down from his throne and asks McCain, "Do you think you deserve to be in heaven?"
McCain takes a breath and then replies, "Well, I think so because I was a great leader and tried to follow the words in your great book." God looks down and then says, "You can sit to my left side."
So, McCain takes his seat and then God asks the same question to Hillary, "Do you think you deserve to be in heaven?" Hillary thinks for a second and then replies, "I think so because I have been fighting for the rights of so many people for so long." God again looks down and this time says, "You can sit to my right side."
Finally God turns to Barack Obama and asks, "Do you think you deserve to be in heaven?"
Obama smiled and replied, "I think you're in my seat."
"Barack Obama gave a big speech on race, and there was one heckler in the audience, kept screaming crazy stuff the whole time. Turns out it was his pastor."
You SHOULD be very concerned if you are: (a) FOR money in politics watering down the representative Democracy the Founders left us for the Republic, (b) FOR letting the criminals who crashed the economy, lost millions their jobs, savings, and homes go unpunished and (c) FOR having G.E. and other huge corporations pay far less in taxes (percentage-wise) that you& me, which contributes to (a) and (b)
I just spent Wednesday night in a tent in the cold, at an Occupy camp. One half of the men I spoke with are ex-military or veterans. They are used to living in tents in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are looking forward to the cold; it will get rid of those who are there for the party. They are some dedicated, committed, and focused patriots. They are working tirelessly to make the country they love better.
Steve: I don't disagree with you at all on those points, but there are too many other OWS things I don't agree with. The answer to those is not to abolish Capitalism, open the borders, raise taxes and re-elect Obama. I have a great aversion to some of the organizers and backers, their techniques and some of the types of people they are attracting.
You're right about the cold chasing away the losers. We had an analogous situation in the Tea Party. The "Sunday Patriots" disappeared when the going got rough, LeftMedia came after us, we had some failures and 2 1/2 hard years passed by.
I would like to see not only crimimal business people removed/convicted, but the politicians who enable them.
The money in politics is more complicated. The 1st Amendment should allow unlimited freedom of speech, but if that money becomes de facto bribes, and also overwhelms others, as in the case of huge union, ACORN or business slush funds, then that might also be wrong. A shorter campaign season, with consistent financial rules, would be good. Even minor party candidates should also have significant exposure.
Outright gifts, subsidies, plane rides, free vacations, quid pro quo transactions, should be absoolutely illegal. Instead, the very people responsible for enforcement are guilty.
The bailouts are the worst offenses and one of the Tea Parties' signature issues-- the $16 trillion Fed total is simply jaw dropping, They have no shame and continue to try to convince us this was all done for us. Litle or no condemnation from anyone but Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann (who voted for TARP) a few investment gurus and renegade economist.
